CNN —Five people have been arrested and multiple firearms have been recovered after a Wednesday afternoon shooting in West Philadelphia, police say. The shooting unfolded at roughly 2:30 p.m. at a park where about 1,000 people had gathered for a celebration, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said during a news conference. A law enforcement source told CNN earlier reports of a shooting prompted a police response to the Clara Muhammad Square. The pending perjury trial of three retired Philadelphia police detectives could prove an exception, if they themselves are not cleared by alleged mistakes by District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office. Former detectives Martin Devlin, Manuel Santiago and Frank Jastrzembski have asked a judge to dismiss the case. That trial testimony was still fair game when Krasner, a civil rights lawyer focused on criminal justice reform, took office in 2018. He charged the Wright detectives in 2021, days before the five-year deadline expired. Last year, a mistake by prosecutors sank a police perjury case in Manhattan, when a judge halted the trial over their failure to turn over evidence to the defense.

The cover of that edition of S.N.C.C.’s newsletter called attention to police killings of Black men, with the headline: “Cops Run Wild. Where Will They Strike Next?” Black and Palestinian resistance to repression were bound together. The theology claims that an immense fraud has been perpetrated by Jews upon Black people. Yet in recent years, a new bond between Black and Jewish activists has emerged, catalyzed, in part, by the confluence of civil rights protests and attention to the Palestinian plight. The alliance is “growing and exciting,” Nyle Fort, a Black activist and assistant professor of African American and African diaspora studies at Columbia, told me.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kelly Oubre Jr. wanted to set the record straight — yes, a vehicle struck him as he walked near his home and the driver fled. Yes, he suffered a traumatic injury and no — he doesn't care for anyone who questioned his account of what happened on that Philadelphia street last month. “This was and is a very traumatic situation for me and my family,” Oubre told reporters Monday at the 76ers' complex in New Jersey. The car, described as silver in color, fled, Oubre told authorities. Oubre said he's “ready to hoop” and rejoin the 76ers (12-7) as they chase a top spot in the Eastern Conference.

So far this year, 86 police officers nationwide have died by suicide, according to the website Blue H.E.L.P., which tracks US officer suicides. (Reuters) - A Philadelphia appeals court judge reinstated charges of murder and other crimes against former police officer Mark Dial on Wednesday for fatally shooting a man as he sat in his car in August. Last month, Philadelphia's district attorney had charged Dial with murder and a host of other offenses for shooting Eddie Irizarry, 27, several times after Dial and another officer had slowly followed him through city streets. A few weeks later, Judge Wendy Pew of the Philadelphia Municipal Court dismissed the charges, citing a lack of evidence and agreeing with Dial's self-defense argument. Police had falsely said Irizarry had left his car and lunged at officers before the department admitted that was not the case. He has been charged with murder, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and official oppression.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A former Philadelphia police officer has been sentenced to 15 to 40 years in state prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting women and girls — often while in uniform and in the back of his police vehicle. Patrick Heron, 54, entered the pleas Friday after reaching an agreement with prosecutors in advance of a trial on more than 200 counts that included child sex assault, child pornography, kidnapping and related offenses, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Jane Roh, spokesperson for the district attorney’s office, said victims who are now spared the trauma of a trial welcomed the guilty plea. Investigators said they later found photos and videos indicating predatory behavior spanning years and including dozens of often vulnerable young women and girls including those who had run away, been arrested or struggled with addiction. She said investigators have identified 48 victims, though many of their identities remain unknown, and more likely haven't come forward.

A Philadelphia police officer was charged with murder after he fatally shot a 27-year-old man who was in his car at near point-blank range, prosecutors announced on Friday, weeks after top police officials announced that body camera footage of the killing showed a different account than what the officer initially described. Dial fatally shot Mr. Irizarry around noon on Aug. 14 after what the police initially said was a car chase ending in Mr. Irizarry lunging at them with a knife. But police officials said two days later that body camera footage showed that the man was still in his car when the officer shot him. The fatal shooting and changing account sparked community anger and protests. In an unusual move, Judge Christian DiCicco of the Philadelphia Municipal Court set bail for Mr.

As the police would later determine, Mr. Wamah was killed by the man who had burst in the door. Arrested soon after, Mr. Carriker, 40, was charged with murder and other offenses and is now being held without bond. But she insisted that even if police had shown up to the right address on July 2, Mr. Wamah would likely have already been dead. Though investigators have since obtained video footage of the shooter entering Mr. Wamah’s house, the man in the video was masked, officials said. They were able to tie Mr. Wamah’s killing to Mr. Carriker by matching the shell casings at the scene to the gun Mr. Carriker was carrying when he was arrested on July 3.

July 4 (Reuters) - Mass shootings in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Fort Worth claimed the lives of 10 people ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, officials said, a grim illustration of the United States' decades-long failure to curb gun-fueled violence. In Fort Worth, Texas, three people were killed and eight wounded in a mass shooting following a local festival, police said on Tuesday. Police in Fort Worth said no arrests have been made. Police have said they are seeking multiple suspects in the Baltimore shooting. The United States has been struggling with a large number of mass shootings and incidents of gun violence.

CNN —Four people were killed and two minors – ages 2 and 13 – were injured in a shooting Monday evening in southwestern Philadelphia, police said. CNN —Police are on the hunt for the people behind a “dime and dash” theft in northeast Philadelphia. At around 6 a.m. Thursday, thieves broke into an unmarked trailer left in a Walmart parking lot, the Philadelphia Police Department told CNN, and made off with about 2 million dimes. Dimes were scattered across the parking lot and the main road nearby. The driver had picked up the coins at the US Mint in Philadelphia and was headed for Florida, according to CNN affiliate WPVI-TV. He left the trailer in the parking lot and went home to get some sleep before the next leg of his journey, the station reported.

REUTERS/Bastiaan SlabbersMarch 20 (Reuters) - Philadelphia will pay $9.25 million to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by racial justice protesters who accused police of abusing them at a 2020 rally following the killing of George Floyd, the city said on Monday. The Legal Defense Fund, one of the organizations representing the plaintiffs, called the settlement one of the largest in the city's history. The Fund said police had agreed to meet with West Philadelphia residents every six months to provide data on its use of force and to take questions from the community. New York City recently agreed to pay out millions to protesters who alleged police abuse during that city's demonstrations in the wake of Floyd's death.

The family lived down the street from the potter’s field where the boy was first buried, and placed flowers there on holidays. It’s a confluence of great detective work, cutting-edge science and the careful art of genealogical research, retired city detective William Fleisher said in his graveside remarks Friday. “It is a big part of our city’s history, a big part of the Philadelphia Police Department’s history. So this is everybody’s victory.”Police now believe the boy lived in West Philadelphia, miles across town from where his body was found. “This has been our whole lives, with this boy, our whole entire lives, since we were children,” said Kim Augustine, 56, Braxton’s sister.
Following her arrest, Hudson's family contacted law enforcement in both Texas and Philadelphia in a bid to clear her name. The Harris County District Attorney's Office in Texas said that after learning about what happened it dismissed the case "within five minutes," citing insufficient evidence. “We accept charges based on the sworn evidence presented to us by law enforcement,” a spokesperson for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office wrote in a statement to NBC Philadelphia. In a statement Thursday, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner apologized for Hudson's ordeal. “The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office became aware of Julie Hudson’s predicament last evening, thanks in part to media reports out of Houston and in Philly,” Krasner wrote.
